Lyd Port: Bio Feedback (WP)
We live in a time in which we are slowly beginning to understand that nature is not just a resource, but an equal participator in life on Earth. The symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast, the so-called SCOBY, from which kombucha is produced, is a fascinating example: A microbial culture that can be fermented into a drink and dried into leather, and whose impressive resilience humans may learn a great deal from. In Bio Feedback, a work by the composer duo LYD PORT and performed by the trio NEKO3, the kombucha SCOBY is made into an artistic muse and musical collaborator: What does it sound like when the fermentation process is translated into piano, marimba and timpani?
Bio Feedback is an exploration of the interaction between nature and humans, body and rhythm, microorganisms and musical instruments. In Bio Feedback, the kombucha SCOBY is reimagined as a metaphor for nature’s versatility and robustness. Rhythms and tones from the fermentation process has provided the foundation for the musical direction and sounds from the SCOBY create an electronic universe that weaves into the composition, and through headtracking technology, the musicians' movements become an integrated part of an electronic sound universe, where each physical interaction creates new musical layers.
Bio Feedback is the culmination of a long development project and is the first in a string of works by LYD PORT, in which biofeedback and microorganisms have been at the center of an aesthetic and auditory investigation. With support from the Danish Arts Foundation and in collaboration with Inter Arts Center, Sound Art Lab, and Radar, the project has developed into a versatile universe. Thus, the work is part of the larger platform, Bio Feedback The Laboratory, which includes a series of artworks – all of which share the common purpose of exploring the connections between man, machine, and nature.
Note: Strobe lights will be used during the concert.
Support
The work was commissioned by Klang Festival and supported by the Dansk Komponistforening/KODA Kultur and Statens Kunstfond which has supported Biofeedback The Laboratory.

LYD PORT
LYD PORT is a cross-aesthetic duo formed by Mai Ane Pil Siedentopp and Morten Schmidt in 2017. Their works, which range from music drama to sound installations, explore the limitations and freedom of humans and machines, and question our connection to – and disconnection from – nature.
NEKO3
NEKO3 is a Copenhagen-based trio consisting of pianist Fei Nie and percussionists Lorenzo Colombo and Kalle Hakosalo. They work towards the creation of a new musical language and repertoire, seeking to integrate music, visual art, installations, body performance, and other forms of art into one conceptual whole.
