Programme
Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen: Songs Without
Free admission.
Klang Festival is excited to present the Pelle Prize, named after legendary composer Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen, for the ninth time. Two prizes are awarded: one to a composer who, like the prize’s namesake, is not afraid to go beyond the norms of the time, and one to a musician who have made a special contribution to the interpretation and realization of new music. As part of this year's award ceremony, last year's winner, mezzo-soprano Hanne-Marie Le Fevre, will interpret Pelle Gudmundsen Holmgren's song cycle, Songs Without (1976). An enigmatic work in which an eclectic series of poems – from medieval anonymous poetry through the romantic William Wordsworth to the modernist Samuel Beckett – is accompanied by an emotionally expressive piano arrangement that is at once repetitive and surprising, subtly suggesting the menacing presence of something insidious lurking just out of sight.
As always, the award winners are not revealed until the award ceremony. The awardees receive 15,000 dk. each. The previous recipients of the prize are composers Jeppe Ernst, James Black, Mette Nielsen, Jens Peter Møller, Marcela Lucatelli, Xavier Bonfill, Nick Martin, and Kirstine Lindemann as well as the pianist Fei Nie and mezzosoprano Hanne-Marie Le Fevre. The jury consists of composer and Pelle-Prize recipient Mette Nielsen, Artistic director of KLANG Festival James Black, Jonas Bille Gamkjær from Edition Wilhelm Hansen, who publishes Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen's compositions, and not least his widow, the artist Karin Birgitte Lund.
