Lasse Schwanenflügel Piasecki: Do you want to go to Janus?
4/6 2023, 20:00
On a small, distant planet, female separatists have realized that the male gender is destructive by nature and must be controlled at an institutional level. The men are kept as breeding animals, while the women of the matriarchy wait impatiently for the chosen one, the prime breed, to become sexually mature. On the longest day of the year, the prime breed must pass on his highly praised genes in a grand ritual ceremony. There's just one problem: the prime breed is not attracted to women, but only loves the piglet – a forbidden, degenerate child who survives as a musical slave for the women, and who has appeared in disguise at the prime breed's fertility rite. The love between the primal breed and the piglet is a threat to the breeding of future generations and the maintenance of the dictatorship of the matriarchy. To survive they must escape to Janus, the central axis around which their dreams and desires revolve.
This is how the dramatic action escalates in Lasse Schwanenflügel Piasecki's operetta film Do you want to go to Janus? – a film that, with a mixture of fervor and satirical absurdity, rejects stereotypical gender perceptions and system-preserving power relations. Piasecki works with what he calls dialectical stylistic pluralism: music's ability to manipulate is actively used to confuse the audience's moral compass and force them to think critically. On the small planet, where Do you want to go to Janus? takes place, all communication is through song, and the music is seductively naive: A fake children's choir accompanies unhappy, reactionary, and totalitarian adults with curious innocence, and the manipulative pathos of the songs keeps the population in a normative iron grip. To create a new world, the Children's Orchestra must stop playing along to the adults' tune.
