"A man walks across an empty space whilst someone else is watching him, and this is all that is needed for an act of theater to be engaged", wrote the British theater director Peter Brook in the iconic book The Empty Space from 1968. In Danish composer Simon Steen-Andersen's work Walk the Walk (2020), this statement is taken to its most extreme and literal consequence. Thus, treadmills, strong headwinds and shoes with luminous soles are used in a performance piece that examines not only the visual and theatrical, but also the musical possibilities of walking. It is the Swiss quartet Ensemble This/Ensemble That that the honor of bringing this study to life has been bestowed upon. The four percussionists are logical candidates to perform a work that treats walking as a kind of concrete percussion. Under their attentive care, walking turns out to possess an infinite – and hitherto unexplored – potential for rhythmic, temporal, and textural variation. In this way, Simon Steen-Andersen and Ensemble This / Ensemble That shed light on life's inherent musicality.
