The highly sought-after British pianist Rolf Hind has for four decades been behind more than a hundred premieres of works by some of the most famous composers of the 20th and 21st century: Hungarian György Ligeti, American Elliott Carter, Korean Unsuk Chin – the list is long. Finally, we can add Danish composer Thomas Agerfeldt Olesen, who has written the piece Piano Sonata specifically for Rolf Hind, to the list. Piano Sonata is an intense musical study of- and response to melancholy. Thomas Agerfeldt Olesen wrote the piece while he was deeply affected by the violent and devastating forest fires in Australia. Working on a sonata while the world was literally on fire suddenly felt strangely meaningless; things like tones, rhythms and musical form suddenly seemed arbitrary. Yet the piece stands todays as a reminder that beauty can sometimes emerge from the attempt to face disaster with the language available to us – no matter how inadequate this language can feel when disaster strikes. "Initially, in the process, I thought of the word sonata, and I immediately envisioned a romantic, virtuoso piano music fighting for its life in the almost inhuman atmosphere of our time," says the composer himself. It is perhaps precisely when disaster strikes that we need music to gather the courage to fight for its life.
