PROJECT HoMe: Duo Dan/Nie
Duo Dan/Nie is a duo consisting of pianist Fei Nie and violinist Sofie Thorsbro Dan, who are always looking for new experimental ways of exploring (or challenging) the classic(al) concert format. In preparation for their concert at this year's KLANG Festival, they have teamed up with composers Aya Yoshida, James Black and Xavier Bonfill on the conceptual project HoMe. Common to the three composers is that they all live in countries that are not their home country, and HoMe is precisely a study of how encountering new cultures, new languages and new sensory impressions affects the compositional work. Three deeply personal and very different works have come out of this: Everything from extravagant costumes to video recordings and MIDI pedals are used in an attempt to answer a number of difficult, existential questions: How is the way we express ourselves affected by being away from home? And what does it even mean to feel at home? The concert concludes with an interpretation of the Icelandic composer Bára Gísladóttir's extremely hair-raising piece Prussian Blue, which the duo describes as part of the modern core repertoire for violin and piano, proving that the place where others might feel the most alienated is where Dan and Nie feel the most at home.
