Athelas Sinfonietta
Athelas Sinfonietta has collaborated closely with Simon Christensen and commissioned pieces by him multiple times. Their latest commission was in February 2019, where they premiered the composer's grand piece Ensemble. A collaboration of this kind shows that it pays off for everybody involved – composer, ensemble and audience – when musicians and composers get to meet, dispute and develop together. Yet another fruit gained from that collaboration is premiered at this concert: Carved in Stone. A new opportunity to be sucked in by Christensen's complex, strong-willed and completely unique world of rhythms and sounds.
The sounds and inhabitants of the forest, the big and minor creators of sound from treetops to fly wings, the idea of roots conversating with one another. Those are the sonorous sources of inspiration for Tjøgersens Klaverkoncert (Piano Concerto). She has examined and developed the piano playing techniques in cooperation with the soloist of the concert and commissioner of the piece, Ellen Uglevik, and the audience are allowed all the way into the piano in the live-video included in the piece.
Remix by Georg Friedrich Haas has its title from the ensemble who commissioned the piece: Remix-Ensemble from Porto, but the title is also indicative of how the piece is constructed. Haas has taken figures, patterns, motives a.o. from earlier pieces and used them in new constellations, put them together in new surroundings. He relates that the piece ended up extremely concentrated and thus very demanding for the performers.
