Opening event: "Dead Calm"

In front of the entrance for the Festival Stage

A calm sea. Dead calm. Two plates of aluminum being the opposite of quiet. They produce sounds. They wash the sounds of the sea – man made and nature’s own – ashore.

Opening concert: Athelas Sinfonietta Copenhagen

Welcome to KLANG 2014 and Athelas Sinfonietta Copenhagen!

Conductor: Pierre-André Valade

The first concert of KLANG 2014 focuses on one of the names that will appear many times during the festival, Niels Rønsholdt. He is the embodiment of sensuousness both gentle and surprising. The two world premieres are by composers with very different expressions: one, Lasse Schwanenflügel Piasecki, is Danish and the other, Diana Soh, from Singapore. The latter has been on Athelas’ repertoire before and her composition zooms in on the details of the sound. Finally, the Danish premiere of Johannes Kreidler’s both visually and tonally strong work Living in a Box will be performed. This is a concert with great diversity and an impressive musical wingspan.

"Old School" Avantgarde 1

As a way of honoring the masters, on whose shoulders today’s musicians stand, the festival offers a tribute to one of the great composers of the twentieth century – performed by some of Denmark’s most promising young musicians.

Berio’s string of incredibly difficult solos, all carrying the title Sequenza, contains expressive and extreme pieces. The violin sequenza is bursting with genuine virtuosic gestures and double stops, long melodic lines, trills and leaps. Yet, the grandiose gestures and terrific virtuosity also gives way to desperation, aggressive outbursts and a certain kind of introspection.

Program

Luciano Berio (IT, 1925-2003)

Sequenza VIII for violin solo (1976)

Luiza Labouriau – violin

The concert in the Festival Café starts after the last concert of the day at Festival Stage. A tickets from a same day concert at the Festival Stage serves as admission or admission can be purchased at the door - 20 kr.

Danish National Chamber Orchestra & SCENATET

KLANG at DR Koncerthuset!

CONDUCTOR - Jonathan Stockhammer

KLANG goes symphony – with the Danish National Chamber Orcestra and SCENATET the festival presents, for the very first time, a concert program with a full orchestra. The orchestra calls the concert for an "Avantgarde  Recital". However, the concert can be expected to be more moving, intimate and delicate than actual ballroom music. Mignon (which translates to sweet in French, and equals the word minne, meaning love in Dutch and the word minde which means memory in Danish) – a new concert for piano by the master of suggestion, Bent Sørensen, is followed by a new and more extensive version of Rønsholdt’s frail and excruciatingly vulnerable art of seduction in Me Quitte.

FIGURA Ensemble: "Wesenheit ab Wesenheit"

A total concert experience about the Cold War, Espionage and Solitary Confinement

This work takes its cue from the Poems from Solitary, written by the East German spy Jörg Meyer while he was detained in solitary confinement in Denmark. The piece seeks to discover some of the side effects of being isolated from the surrounding world. Not only the loneliness, which is imminent, but also the psychological effects of long term solitary confinement such as schizophrenia, anxiety and fear. These are the emotions the music is trying to capture. Like a blind person Meyer grapples at the sounds he hears; from people, cars and birds, in an effort to translate them into imaginary, moving images. Thus, the composition is one of concrete sounds, dreaming away beyond the walls and bars of the prison cell.

"Old School" Avantgarde 2

As a way of honoring the masters, on whose shoulders today’s musicians stand, the festival offers a tribute to one of the great composers of the twentieth century – performed by some of Denmark’s most promising young musicians.

Interwoven layers of pitches, lengths and dynamic fluctuations etc. are the material from which In Freundshaft is build. A tight composition that controls every possible outcome of its sounds, as is characteristic of Stockhausen. Equally characteristic is the special blend of curiosity and momentum in the musical expression. Avantgarde with an incredibly human face!

Defunensemble

The young Finnish ensemble performs electroacoustic works at the highest level!

There are figurines and dolls hidden in the concert program of Defunensemble.
Haapanen’s work is based on a fascination with for example the dolls of Hans Bellmer, and Nordic Death Metal inspires the work of Kiyama. In Jodlowski’s Dialogue - No Dialogue musical figures emerge – a flute and a voice – which are trying to communicate. Rock sounds, electronics, a world of new sound opens up.
This is not a concert that invites the casual encounter – rather it initiates a restless energy keeping its listeners on the edge of their seat.

"Old School" Avantgarde 3

As a way of honoring the masters, on whose shoulders today’s musicians stand, the festival offers a tribute to one of the great composers of the twentieth century – performed by some of Denmark’s most promising young musicians.

Notes played so fast that they are perceived as a continuum of sound; as one long wave of resonance. Incredibly demanding for the harpsichordist who has to play at top speed for about four minutes. For the listener Continuum is a musical adrenalin pump, which challenges rhythmic stability and in its own way brings the exhilaration of sporting events into the concert hall.

Hungarian Rock is ten years Continuum’s junior and acts as a kind of brat little sister. Hungarian Rock is a rhythmically playful and sharp as a knifes edge transformation act, glittering with Free-Jazz, Improvisation, Chopin, Passacaglia, silliness and sudden death.

Program

The ensemble plays crisp works for few instruments, electronics and sharp precision.

Conductor: Casper Schreibner

Graphic Notation Miniatures is the subtitle of Kreidler’s Sheet Music. Short, intense and focused. The last two words are also fitting of the next compositions in this program. The short glimpses in Kreidler’s second composition Shutter Piece, the frail sounds and the rhythms of Bauckholt and a short film piece with a sneeze, which inspire a creation of a work cutting between acoustic and computer generated sound in Hurt. Toys, piano and recordings of sound create the sound universe of in Hodkinson’s work. A concert with Danish and German tones interwoven. Rei Nakamura

A voice, a statement recorded on CD plays  in concert with a piano. Such is the simple concept of Voice and Piano by Peter Ablinger. The large work-in-progress should end up containing 80 voices, or pieces that together make an overwhelming cycle. Mach Sieben by Michael Beil is going backwards and forwards at the same time. The music is the mirror and reverse - and the performer filmed and vice versa. All at the same time. "Music is time made audible" writes Klaus Lang about his own music. Time that can be sensed - this time in the form of the piano. Kreidlers Study was composed for piano and audio and video playback. Rei Nakamura premiered the piece in November 2011.

Trio Con Brio Copenhagen

Welcome to a trip to dreamland! Denmark's best trio featuring works of the older generation of contemporary Danish composers.

Four compositions living in the dark of night, or perhaps in the light of dreams. Fragments (after the dream). Nørgaard describes the music as vague atmospheric “tales”.
Phantasmagoria is a play of shadows. To me, a play of shadows in the dark, where contours of people and music – voices and instruments – create tales on top of each other”. The words come from Bent Sørensen. Shadows of other compositions; instruments are shadowing each other. Shadowplay and dreamsongs. Hans Abrahamsen’s Traumlieder is based on his earlier works, with a built-in Funeral March, Blues and Arabesque. Title and material for Moments Musicaux is borrowed from Schubert. A mixed bag of musical moments from Schubert put together by Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen.

DissonArt Ensemble

The powerful Greek ensemble has the ambition to perform Greek music abroad and take international music home. This concert embraces both.

A very European concert, with an ensemble from Greece, and composers born in Denmark, Italy, Spain, Switzerland and Austria. The quality of the sound and the texture of the tones will seep out into the audience as the concert progresses. Not necessarily as noise or intense sound but more as an invitation to delve down deep into the world of the music. In Sciarrino’s sensuous Chamber Music, in Furrer’s chilly, broken glass and in Rønsholdt’s heartfelt soundpower.

"Old School" Avantgarde 4

As a way of honoring the masters, on whose shoulders today’s musicians stand, the festival offers a tribute to one of the great composers of the twentieth century – performed by some of Denmark’s most promising young musicians.

Solo percussion working with minimal material creating great effect. The instruments are kept to only drums and woodblocks, and the sound created is dry and precise. The beginning is controlled and creates a sort of frame, a frame increasingly filled with more and more musical material. The tension between the strict and the untamed is – as always – a fertile combination in Xenakis’ work and Rebonds is no exeption.

Program

Iannis Xenakis (GR/FR, 1922-2001)
Rebonds (1988)

Mivos Quartet

American Mivos Quartet is already in high demand with their virtuoso approach to the performance of new music. At KLANG the quartet present new pieces by American and Danish composers.

The American string quartet Mivos Quartet will play completely new works by American as well as Danish composers. Alex Mincek’s quartet has the subtitle “Lift – tilt – filter – split”. Atmende Steine, a breath of life in lifeless rocks, is a delicate quartet for strings by Martin Stauning. Mark Barden’s Nocturne consists of three energetic movements filled with contrasts – definitely more than just a quiet song in the night! The quartet’s second work by a Danish composer is by Lasse Schwanenflügel Piaseck and is a string quartet, which was originally performed by the Arditti Quartet and contains three movements: 1. Energetic 2. Enamored 3. Aggressive.
